Tho Grimshaw memorial match will be held next Saturday, and will consist of ail 18-hole handicap match against bogey. This event is the result of the wish on the part of several friends of the late 1. W. Grimshaw to perpetuate his memory. ; It has been t resolved that a cup shall be purchased, to he held from time to time by the winner, and that a medal shall be given to the winner. Entries close next Wednesday. The club could do with a few more _ visitors of this kind, as it is an education in itseli to watch a really good player. , Expert opinion in England and Scotland is that amateur play In tho matter of driving and approaching has improved almost out 01 recognition during the last 10 years, and professional golf has also advanced greatly. But in putting there has been no advancement, arid in spite of improved greens and the multitude of patent putters, putting now is said to bo rather worse than it was 25 yeiirs ago, in the days when the old wooden putter was the solo weapon,. and the ' old school wore wont, to play freely and* easily at the ball, instead of going through the contortion acts with which so many putters of to-day endeavour to overcome their weakness.
