GRAVES OF NEW ZEALANDERS IN SOUTH AFRICA.
Mb. B. H. AVERT, clerk of works, 1.M.R., Johannesburg, writes:—"l am trying to arrange for something to be done with,a view to the permanent marking of the graves of those New Zcalanders who have fallen and any thai- may fall in the future. I propose to convene a meeting of New Zealandcra and others who would be willing to assist in the niattei. A numbei of the graves have been marked with, small wooden crosses, etc., but these are liable to get removed, or to be destroyed, especially whore the grave is out on the open veldt, as a great number are. What we propose to do is to collect the necessary information to enable us to identify these, and have all such information carefully recorded in each case, the grave marked in a permanent way, and, if possible, to erect proper headstones. I would bo glad if you would make it known through the columns of the Now Zealand papers what we propose doing, and that all information from friends and relations who wish to have the graves of those who have fallen taken in hand should be forwarded at once, as, what with heavy rain and the rapidity of growth in parts of this country, identification in some cases may now bo very difficult indeed. Information and any instructions can be forwarded to me for the present."
