HIE GOLD RETURNS.

TOTAL FOR THREE WEEKS,

£57,649 12s lid. INCREASE FOR THE QUARTER, £42,427 7s lOd. The gold returns for the Auckland district for the past three weeks have reached a. total of £57,649 12s lid, which is well up to the average. The figures showing the total yield from the district for the first quarter of the current year are now completed, the output for the period named amounting to £189,113 12s Id. Compared with the total for the first quarter of last year (£146.636 4s 3d) this reveals the substantial and satisfactory increase of £42,427 7s lOd. CO., LIMITED. ANOTHER RECORD RETURN. £41,231 FROM '12,956 TONS. FIRST QUARTER'S TOTAL, "£121,780. LARGE INCREASE OVER LAST YEAR. TOTAL TO DATE, £2,096,292. During the four weeks ending March 29. the Waihi Gold Mining Company crushed and treated 12,956 tons of ore for a return of bullion valued at, £41,231, or an average of £3 3s 7d per ton. This constitutes a fresh record, the next highest yield being that of February last, when 12.939 tons gave a return of £41.090. The present teturn completes the company's output for the. first quarter of the present year, showing for that period a total of £121.780, which, compared with the total for the first; quarter of 1901 (when the output amounted to £92.668), reveals an increase of no less than £29,112. It is worthy of note that this increase for the quarter is not due to au increase in the tonnage of ore. dealt with. On the contrary, the tonnage treated during the first quarter of this year is less than that dealt with in the corresponding three months of last year. In 1901 a total of 38.961 tons was crushed for the yield of £92,668; in 1902. 38,815 tons have produced the yield of £121,780 now recorded. These figures give an average value per ton for the 1901 period of £2 7s 6d, whereas for 1902 the average works out at £3 2s 8d per ton, showing that the increase in the output is entirely due to the fact that the company is this year handling higher grade ore.
