THE GOLDFIELDS.
AUCKLAND SHAREMARKET. The Stock Exchange was closed yesterday for the observance of St. George's Day, and will reopen for business this morning. MARATOTO G.M. CO. The contractors in the Maratoto mine advanced the new crosscut 12ft during last week, making the total distance driven 475 ft, and leaving 45ft to be driven to reach the Maratoto reef. BROKEN HILL G.M. CO. In the Broken Hill mine at Waiorao the crosscut from the No. 4 level to intersect the reef has now been extended 69ft. The country is a satisfactory class of sandStone, but is at present hard. BIG BEETLE G.M. CO. In the Big Beetle mine, at Gumtown, the winze on No. 2 leader is down 40ft. The leader is about the same size ail the way down, and prospects well. The crosscut to intersect this leader at a lower level has been driven sft. MAY QUEEN EXTENDED. [nV TELEGRAPH. OWN" CORRESPONDENT.] THAMES, Wednesday. The work of breaking down the stripped portions of the new reef in the May Queen Extended mine in the eastern and western drives respectively has been in progress since yesterday, and will be completed with this afternoon s shift. So far strong colours of gold have been seen in the ore broken out, and the reef has widened out to about 2ft in the eastern drive and to 20in in the western drive. In both faces the reef is of a fairly compact character, and continues to carry excellent mineral indications, whilst the country on both walls is still a most congenial class of sandstone. During the next few days operations will be confined to stripping the reef for another breaking down. TAURANGA WARDENS COURT. [BV TELEGRAPH. — OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Tackanga, Wednesday. There was a busy day at the Warden's Court to-day. Mr- A C. Lewis applied, on behalf of Mr. C. Keeble, for the Golden Link special claim, which was granted, subject to the surveyor's report being furnish-, ed. Water-races to J. A. Clark and J. Fahey were applied for, and three months' adjournment granted. Mr. Lewis appeared in both these cases. Residence sites in the Atuaroa township were granted to J. H. Griffiths, J. A. Mann, E. L. Smith, and M. E. Griffiths. Six other applications for residence sites were withdrawn. An application for forfeiture of the Ben Lomond special claim was heard, Mr. Sharp appearing for the applicant (Wiremu Ngatoto) and Mr. Lewis for the defendant (Peter Grant). The case caused considerable public interest, and a good deal of evidence was taken, judgment being reserved. SOUTHERN MINING. [BY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Dunedin, Wednesday.
