THE KING'S LEVEE.
By Telegraph.— Association.—Copyright,
London, April 22. King Edward held a numerouslyattended levee at St. James' Palace. The Prince of Wales, Prince Christian, and the Duke of Argyll were present. A number of colonial visitors in London attended. Several colonial officers were presented to the King.
The King's first levee was held in February, and was a very brilliant function. The Times, in describing it, said:—-"It is a long time since so many varied costumes have been seen in the Park. There were bishops in lawn sleeves and scarlet hoods, attended by their chaplains in the lons black gowns and white bands which are now rarely donned except on very special occasions; there were eminent lawyers in full-bottomed wigs and flowing robes, there were tnrbaned diplomatists, foreign officers in gorgeous uniforms, British generals and admirals; in fact, a veritable gallery of picturesque, historical, and official uniforms was to be seen a* the distinguished personages took their departure. The scene gained animation from the presence of a email army of footmen running hither and thither for the carriages of their masters. The whole spectacle ' was lively and interesting in the extreme, and seemed to transport one to the olden times, when costume was more magnificent and when there was more of ostentation than the taste of our somewhat drab days sees fit to approve except upon occasions of State ceremonial."
