He congratulated them on the way in which they had upheld the . honour of" their country.' He was proud to feel; that the Seventh New Zealand Contingent- had been equal to that task as had all the contingents that went before them. He regretted that many had returned'': horn© wounded, and it .was a sadder fact that others would Hot return at) all, but it was a pleasure to him to welcome, the men by the Aotea, who bad ; come back to their homes in' good health and with a splendid record behind them. : [BY TELEGIUr-H.— COBIIKSPONDJHSrr.] Wellington, Friday. There is a stringent regulation that any man who has suffered from enteric within the past 12 months must not be allowed.to join the contingent. ' Despite : this some • men have succeeded in forcing their war in,'' and have had to leave. • One man was discovered to-day at Trentham, who, from this cause, was medically unfit. for service, and the regulation has \ been enforced against him. Three or; four full-blooded ; Maoris have obtained admission to the contingent, but it is understood that they, aro not to be allowed to:proceed to South "Africa.; There is ■ also ') a") South '; Sea ', Islander,"who is de-) scribed. as one. of the smartest and most ac- \ tive men in the contingent,.as well as onej of the most popular; but ;the question hasi been raised in his case also. The sole ob- ; jection against these men is that of colour. The men themselves are very much ' con-! cerned, at the prospect of being excluded.) One of them told his officer that he was willing to take all risks, including that of being shot if he fell into the hands of the Boers,' if he were allowed to go to the front. ■■;■?)The) half-castes will not be objected. to, and will proceed with the contingent. \ The Auckland men," nettled at a. suggestion that the Wellington men were able to beat them in the tugs-of-war, challenged their rivals to another of these contests today, when the honours rested with Auckland. There was a great pull between two teams from Auckland, one representing the "C" 'squadron and the other the "D" squadron. .'.'■ Finally the latter. team won. /
