TO-DAY'S AMATEUR ATHLETIC CARNIVAL.
The spring sporht. carnival of that old established and popular amateur athletic body t'lo Auckland A.A. and C.C. takes place a - the Domain Cricket Ground this afternoon, commencing at a-quarter past two o'clock. Fifteen events figure on the programme, which has been arranged to allow of the club getting an idea of the form of the various competitors in view of the New Zealand championship meeting to be held here in December. The fact that this important gathering is to be held in Auckland this year lias led to a revival in amateur sport, and should ensure 'some excellent performances being recorded at to-day's sports Both runners and cyclists have been well catered for, and as the handicaps have been well framed the various events promise to furnish close finishes, while additional interest is lent to the gathering by the announcement that G. W. Smith, champion hurdler of Australasia, will endeavour to beat his own record of .15 3-ss. for the 120 yds hurdles, established last November, in competition against M. M. Roseingrave. As usual afternoon tea will be provided in a large marquee fox the club's lady patrons, and the proceedings will be enlivened by a series of popular airs by Hunter's Garrison Band. Given fint weather th© carnival should be largely attended, «nd those directly interested in the racing will find a few hints as to the probable results of the events in the athletic sports columns ot to-day's issue.
