THE WAR BURNING ITSELF OUT.

SPEECH BY LORD MILXER. 'Received October 3!, 0.17 a.m.) London, October 30. Lord Milner, speaking at Durban, said the war was burning itself out and there was nothing left for it to feed itself upon. I BOER GUNS[BY TKI.KORAPH.—SPECIAL CORKESPOXDEST.] Wku.inctos, Wednesday. The two Boer guns in front of the main entrance to Parliament Hnuso are a source of much interest to visitors to Wellington. I A historic account of how they came into the possession of the New Zealand Governmeat was to-oay presented to Parliament. Lieutenant-Colonel Davits, C.8., command* ! ing the Fourth New Zealand Regiment, I states that towards the end of last February, | while the regiment was under General Bai>j ington's command, it was camped for some I time on a hilt called Noauwpoort, near the j Magliesberg Ranges, in Western Transj vaal, about 25 miles west of Krugersdorp. j Information was received that two guns, a. Krupp and a Vickers-Maxim. or pom-pom, were buried on a farm belonging to John De la Key, and the New ileal and Regiment covered the party that dug the guns up and brought them back to camp. On March 24. last, the Fourth New Zealand Regiment, under General liabingtoii. together with the Sixth New South. Wales Imperial Bushmen, were mainly instrumental in capturing nine. guns from General De la Key,, viz., six Maxims, two Krupps, and! one pom-pom. Again, in the beginning of May, during a combined movement against the enemy at Hartebeeetfontein, near Klerksdorp, >> Krupp gun was unearthed. Just before leaving Capetown, Lieutenant-Colonel Davie-: was- informed that a Krupp and a pom-pom had been given to the Fourth and Fifth New Zealand Regiment to take back to New Zealand as trophies of war, in recognition of the good sen-ices rendered by them. Colonel Davies states that he is practically certain the pom-pom is the one taken in February, and the Krupp the one taken in May. The gift of the. guns appears to have been obtained through the good offices of General Babington.
