ACCIDENT.
A CARTER KILLED. 'A shocking accident took place yesterday afternoon, shortly before five o'clock, to one of Messrs. Winstone and Co's carters, named James Donaldson. He was taking a load of coal, about two tons and a-half, to Messrs. Carder's, Ponsonby, in a fourwheeled waggon. In going up Pitt-street, between Grey and Vincent Streets, he was seen by Mr. Sederberg, a commercial traveller, to be apparently rolling a cigarette, and then to lean forward (probably to strike . a match on the brake). He lost his balance, and fell behind the shaft-horses, escaping the near front wheel, but being caught by the hind wheel, whieh went over his neck and face. Mr. John deal, fruiterer, of Ponsonby, and Mr. George Daley, of Upper Queen-street, also saw the accident, but the whole thing occurred so quickly that they were not quite clear as to the details. Death was instantaneous. The body was taken into the yard of Mr. S. C. Parker, builder, and shortly afterwards Dr. Walker came on the scene, but all that was left for him to do was to pronounce life extinct. Mr. George Winstone was greatly shocked when he heard of the fatality, and came to the place to see j about matters. He had just been speak- > ing to Donaldson before he left the coal- j yard. Donaldson was 34 years of age. I single, and had been with Messrs. Win- ' stone and Co. for about 13 years. He was ( much esteemed and respected, and a steady, , reliable driver. He resided with his j mother, a widow, in East-street, Newton. i Constables Harvey and Macartney had the j body of the unfortunate man removed to j the morgue to await an inquest, which will . be held to-day by Mr. Gresham, coroner.
