MAGISTRATE'S COURT. Mb. H. W. Brabant, S.M., presided over a sitting of the Magistrate's Court yesterday. J. Sill v. T. Gillibrdnd: This was a claim to recover £5 3s, being the amount of an assigned debt by John Churton to the- plaintiff. Defendant disputed the debt on the ground that he had not contracted with the plaintiff for the purchase of a number of butter boxes forming the subject of the claim. After hearing evidence His Worship said that he was satisfied of the liability of the defendant to pay the debt, and accordingly gave judgment for the plaintiff for £* 5s 6d, and costs £1 16s. Mr. Baxter appeared for the plaintiff and Mr. O'Meagher for the defendant. S. Rout v. F. Smart: In this case the plaintiff claimed from the defendant tho sum of £10, being the balance of purchae money. The defendant put in a counter claim that the amount had been satisfied by delivery of certain goods taken away by plaintiff. Several witnesses were examined and eventually tho case was adjourned till next Thursday. Mr. Ruddle represented the plaintiff, and Mr. McGregor appeared for the defendant.
POLICE COURT NEWS. Tim Bench at the sitting oi tho Police Court yesterday was occupied by Messrs. J. St. Morran and J. J. Jenkins. .T.P.'s. Drunkenness: James McKeown was fined £.. ; . with the option of going to prison for ?,4 hours. Eliza Rice, Samuel Dinan, and Duncan McDongall, previously-convicted offenders for drunkenness, were each lined 10s. with the alternative of being imprisoned for 48 hours. Samuel Blair, against whom there were also previous convictions recorded, was fined 20s, or in default seven days' imprisonment. > Alleged Theft: Two middle-aged men named John Dinan and Samuel Blair, were charged with that they did steal from the person of Edward Hutchinson a watch and chain, one sovereign-case, one gold Maltese cross, and one pipe, the total value of the articles being £15 14s. Chief-Detective Grace, who represented the prosecution. said that the accused were only arrested on Wednesday, and so as to give the police lime to investigate the case he would ask for a remand till the 14th inst.. which their Worships granted. Attempted Suicide: William Pharoah. who a few days ago tit Pon=onby made a determined attempt to commit suicide by shooting himself in the temple with a small pocket pistol, was brought before the Court. Sub-Inspec-tor Mitchell applied for a remand till this morning. He stated that the man was only a recent arrival in th« colony. He understock, that the man wanted bail, but unfortunately the person who had promised to go surety for him had failed to appear, and therefore the accused would have to remain in custody. The remand was granted.
