HAWKES BAY AGRICULTURAL SHOW.
j [BY telegraph.— press ASSOCIATION.] I Napier, Thursday. i The Hawke's Bay Agricultural and Pastoral I Society's annual show commenced to-day. I The show is the best ever hold in the proI vince, both in the numbei and quality of I exhibit?. The show of cattle was exceptionI ally good, it being generally conceded that i the shorthorns could not be beaten in the ! colony, while in the general excellence of j the catt'e exhibits the opinion was expressed ! that the show would rank with the Canter- ! bury Metropolitan Show. There were some ! very fine Hercfords, Ayrshire?, and Jersey and Alderney cattle shown. There was a splendid entry ot sheep, the Lincoln classes bringing together the pick of the North Island flocks of this breed, such well-known breeders as the Hon. J. D. Ormond, Messrs. T. Tanner, E. J. Watt, Hugh Campbell, R. D. D. McLean, Perry Brothers, and Rayner Brothers competing. The other breeds, with the exception of merinos, were also well represented, Messrs. -las. Stuckey and S. R. Lancaster being the principal prize-takers lin Southdowns; Messrs. Nelson Brothers, R. ! D. D. McLean, Hugh Campbell, and P. C. i Threlkeld. in English Leicester*; while the I Hon. J. D. Ormond, Messrs. Nelson Bros., j and E. J. Watt, divided honours in Border Leicesters. There was considerable com- ! petition in the Romney Marsh classes. ! Messrs. W. B. Allen, J. Sykes. F. Hutohin- ; inn, B. Chambers, and It. H. Mackenzie I sharing the awards. Draught horses and i thoroughbred sires were shown. The follow j ing were the championship awards:—Sheep: English Leicester ram, Nelson Bros.; English Leicester ewe, Nelson Brothers; Border Leicester ram, Hon. J. D. Ormond; Border Leicester ewe, Hon. J. D. Ormond ; Lincoln ram, B. and W. Raynei ; Lincoln ewe, Hon .7. D. Ormond. Cattle: Shornhorn bull, Archdeacon Williams' Riby Duke of Derrii mut; or thorn cow, deacon Williams' ! Duchess of Connaught 13th. Horses: Thoroughbred sire, Hon. J. D. Ormond's Sir Lancelot; draughts, Clydesdale sire, li. D. D. McLean's Loch Lomond. The hunters' jumping competition was won by King Jimmy, belonging to Miss Reynolds, of Gisl>oine, Mr. G. L. Sunderland's well-known hunter The Sinner being second. The attendance was the largest ever seen on the ground on a first day, being almost as large as is usually seen on the people's day. There is every prospect of fine weather for the second day, and it is anticipated there will be a record attendance.
