THE FEDERAL TARIFF.
INCREASE OF DUTIES. By Telegraph.—Press Association.— (Received October 9, 2 a.m.) Melbourne, October 8. Tire Federal Budget was delivered to-night in the House of Representatives. The Treasurer stated that he estimated the tariff in normal years would yield £8,900,000. For the current year he expected to get a little over £8,000,000. He estimated Customs and excise revenue would yield £2 7s 9d per head in New South Wales, and £2 3s in Victoria. The tariff proposed in many items is lower than the Victorian, but it is loudly complained of by New South Wales bersThe tariff includes bacon and hams, 3d lb; grain and pulse, n.e.i.e. per cental, Is 6d; ditto prepared or manufactured, Id lb; bran, pollard, sharps, Is per cental; enumerated, 2s 6d. (Received October 9, 0.17 a.m.) Sviivky, October 8. The Mokoia, arrived at four o'clock this afternoon. The company state that the arrival was entered at the Customs at ten minutes past four p.m., or five minutes before the usual time, at which the receipts of entries cease. It is understood that a dispute has arisen in the matter. The ground taken is that the dutiable articles were not entered until after four o'clock. As the Mokoia's cargo does not include dutiable goods (under the present tariff') itis claimed that the Customs authorities must have better arguments for their exclusion. [BY TELEGRAPH.— PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Dunebin, Tuesday. As the Federal tariff comes into operation to-morrow, the Union Company despatched the Mokoia one day early, in order that her large cargo of produce should escape duty, if any. Intimation has been received that the Mokoia arrived 20 minutes before the closing of the Customhouse.
