According to American Gardening, the advent of the seedless lemon should be hailed with welcome in all parts of the globe. The acme of perfection in the orange kingdom is the navel, its praises having been sung and its merits known all over the world. Among the requirements of a lemon for market are comparative seedlessness, thin rind, and light pulp Dr. Wbodbridge, the wellknown agricultural chemist of Los Angeles, ' has succeed in producing a navel lemon absolutely seedless, and possessing the characteristics and advantages of the orange, after which it is named, for he has named the new lemon California Navel lemon. An illustration in the California Cultivator shows the lemon and a cross section. The navel is very marked, and the shape, etc., follows very closely that of the "orange. Here, however, the resemblance stops, for the acidity runs*very high. The doctor has been pressed to divulge the origin of this novelty, but he declined. He said that for the past two years the fruit had presented the same characteristics, and he hoped it had come to stay. ~ ■ ~ ■ The polling day in the Mount Eden road district on the proposed loan for special water district No. 2 is on Saturday, August 17, between nine a.m. and six p.m., at the schoolroom of the Methodist Church, Valley Eoad. The proposals will be found elsewhere. Special line in Austrian bentwood chairs, now selling at Is lid, to clear. This is the last weak; don't forget.— Garlick Coy. ■ .
