For the Cup 1000 to 85 was accepted about Merriwee; 2500 to 50 went down to Gauleon, and 1000 to 100 (twice) to Seventy. r Dirk Hammerhand was supported to win ("000 at 100 to 2, and Wait-a-Bit was backed at tho same price to win £3000. Other wagers £' corded were:-500 to 30 v. Mora, 1000 to 20 Cornquist, 1500 at 100 to li Balhstite, 400 to 24 War God, 700 to 100 Lancaster (taken three times), 3200 to 51 Revenue. 1500 to 30 Alix, 700 to 42 Kinglike. A few hundreds were laid against ICaaba aiid Clean Sweep. Kinglike was solidly supported to win fully £10,000 at 100 to 6. George Frederick eased in consequence of an accident. Art nr God was well backed to win several thousands. Later.

Consequent on his easy victory in the Melbourne Stakes, Lancaster is now a pronounced favourite for the Melbourne Cup at 3to 1; 10 to lis offered on the field bar one. TRAINING NOTES. George Frederick, when exercising yesterday, crossed his legs, and fell, giving his rider a nasty shaking. The horse worked this morning soundly. Skylark, when starting work, bolted, and threw his rider over a fence. Both rider and horse escaped serious injury. _ l , Late yesterday Kaaba traversed a mile and seven furlongs really well in 3m. 275. Wait-a-Bit went the first" half-mile with him, and Riccarton the concluding nine furlongs. This morning Clean Sweep decisively defeated The Bride over a mile and a half ill 2m. 425., an excellent gallop. Seahorse is gradually improving from the effects of influenza, and is now out of danger. THE TIP FOR THE CUP. It looks as though Lancaster, Severity, and Kinglike will fill places in the Cup. LANCASTER'S VICTORY. [by phaeton.] The brilliant victory achieved by Lancaster in the Melbourne Stakes is undoubtedly one of the strongest Cup tips that could be wished for. The only "crack" missing from the select crowd of weight- talent which the son of Hotchkiss silenced on Saturday was Morriwce, but it is difficult to think his presence would have made any difference to the result. The son of Hotchkiss won his race on Saturday under 9st, which is 181b in excess of the impost allotted to him in tho Melbourne Cup, and as no doubts are entertained as to his staying capacity, everything may be said to point to his proving terribly hard to beat to-morrow in the great llemington handicap. On paper, the _ Cup no doubt looks 44 all over bar tho shouting, but it is just as well for those who go abetting to remember the cases of Trenton in 1885 and Ruenalf in 1894. Both theso horses won the Melbourne Stakes, yet in the Melbourne Cup they each went down under 7st 131b and 7st 71b respectively. It can, of course, be argued that Lancaster is not likely to meet so strong a. field as did his relative, T/enton, who certainly had bad luck to strike a brace of good ones in Sheet Anchor and Grace I Darling. Under any circumstance, howover, a Melbourne Cup takos some winning.
