' SHIPPING SUMMARY. Business in shipping circles still remains very brisk, and the shortage of vessels ior the intercolonial trade continues, all vessels of the right class being promptly chartered. The principal event of the month has been the arrival of the Northern S.S. Company s now steamer Ngapuhi. from Dundee, alter a good voyage of 82 clays. The .Ngapuhi « intended tor the trade between Onehunga ana New Plymouth, and will be placed in commission next week. So far as can .be, seen the steamer will prove herself well fitted for the trade in which she is to bo \ employe, and it is expected that the distance between the two ports will be covered by the vessel in about 12 hours. The Danish barque Else . recently purchased by Mr. J. J. Craß. i ° 1 Auckland, after being on the reef at Apia, has been repaired. and refitted: at this port, and will enter the intercolonial trade at once. The barque suffered very little damage by going on a the reef, and will prove an acquisition to the . locally-owned fleet. _J be quarterly shipping returns tor the peuoa ending September 30 last, have been comDietedl by the Customs. These show that during that time 47. steamers of 84,388 tons, and 2715 men as crews, and 11 sailers of 5426 tons, with 113 men as crews, entered inwards. Of these ?37 tons were ! from the United Kingdom; 6 steamers of 2065 tons and 16 sailers of 25.450 tons, were from New South Wales; 1 sailer was from South Australia; 1 steamer from Bengal; 10 steamers of 10,194 tons were from Fiji; 5 steamers of 13.221 tons from the United States; and 6 steamers of 5473 tons and 4 sailers of 2763 tons were from the Pacific Islands. The outward clearances show that 36 steamers of 54.093 tons, with,2lo2 men as crews, and 16 sailors of 6027 tons, with 145 men as crews, cleared. 01 these one steamer was bound to the United Kingdom; 2 sailers of 1065 tons were, bound to Victoria; 4 steamers of 3563 tons, and 9 sailers of 3474 tons, for New South Wales; 3 steamers of 6292 tons and 1 sailer ■ Jot the I United States; and 7 steamers of 5955 tons, ! and 4 sailers of 808 tons, for the Pacific ; Islands. The Tyser liner Indramayo arrived I from New York and Australia on September ' 29 and on discharge took in consignments i for London, and left for the South to comI plete her loading. ■ The steamer Cereda arrived from Now York and Southern ports on ' the 2nd inst with general merchandise, and is now loading baulk timber at Kennedy's Bay for Melbourne, and should get away tomorrow. On the 4th inst. the Tyser liner Indraghiri arrived from London and Australia.'and on discharge proceeded to Wellington, and is now on her way to Newcastle and Melbourne to load for London. On tho 20th inst. the Shaw, Savill. and Albion Company's steamer Maori arrived from Albany to load for London, and will proceed south to complete. The American barque Edward L. Mavbarry sailed for New York on the 20th with "a, full cargo" of kauri gum. Daring her stay in this port the vessel had a new foremast stepped, besides undergoing a thorough overhaud. The steamer Menantic arrived" from Now York and the South on the 22nd : inst., and leaves to-day for New Caledonia to load nickel ore for New York. On the 24th the Union Company's mail steamer Moana arrived from San Francisco. Honolulu.- and Ania with the English, and American mails. This is the test trip of the Moana on the mail line, and she is to be placed in the intercolonial trade. The Mariposa leaves Auckland for San Francisco on Monday next, but owing to the withdrawal of the Moana. and the new steamer Sierra not being readv to take up the running in time, there will be no steamer from Auckland to San Francisco until December 8. The colonial mails next month will therefore bo sent by way of Sue/ and Vancouver. The American haroue Alice is now loading at this- port for New York with kauri gum, and will sail abont November 10.
