The opening day of the Otahulni Trotting j Club's Spring Meeting was held at Potter's 1 Paddock 011 Saturday, and notwithstanding j various counter attractions, about 2500 people 1 were present. The weather was perfect, and j some good sport was witnessed. The sum 1 of £3302 was passed through the totalisator ! 1(10s tickets) which was under the management | of Mr. W. Blomfield. Mr. A. 11. Harris was judge, and Mr. R. 1., Absolum acted as , starter in the absence of Mr. Geo. Cutis, who j is confined to his house. The arrangements of the meeting were carried out by the score- ' , tary (Mr. W. L. Lockhart) with his usual ability. The catering of Mr. A. F. Stillwell • left nothing to be desired. The handicap- ' ping of Mr. W. Knight brought out some large fields: nevertheless it was a " favourite's day," there being 110 very large dividends. . The dual victories of Hollywood and First Whisper were very hollow, the Clisborno pony showing a remarkable turn of speed, . , simply smothering her opponents in both her races. In the Telephone Trot Boh, who was first past the post, broke badly several times, which caused the owner of the mare who ran second to enter a protest on the grounds of galloping. The stewards met and upheld the protest. Hollywood, who lias much improved, won the chief event of the ; programme, and was penalised in the Harness 1 Trot 7s. for his victory, hut this did not pre- ' vent him from defeating all opposition in , that event.
