This 2 W O LSenUfr Hst. cost of latulin g '° about cu per cent off list. Advices from Sydney quote tin as having again recovered after the slight lull, and being now firm at £142 pur ton. The bulk of our supplies are now drawn from this source, and only some of the finest quality is imported from English and Continental markets. di\ ™ ' )l! ' a Quoted at an advance of £13 10s per ton locally, owing to the shortage of supplies, and flax rope has been advanced £3 per ton in consequence of the excited sta.i of the flax market, caused by the speculative demand, which has arisen during the last week or two on account of the further complications between Ainerioa and the Philippines. It is difficult to say with any certainty if the extreme prices now being offered will be maintained, as if the coastal ports on the Philippines are opened, which they may be at any time, supplies will again come forward in considerable quantity, as stocks are fairly large, the only hindrance being the stoppage of shipping by America to prevent war supplies being landed for the insurgents. Kerosene remains firm at Inst quotations, and cornsacks are shorter than ever, pending the arrival of the Umta at the end of the week.

Bell's vestas have advanced Is per gross all round, and supplies are coining to hand very slowly, as the Wellington factory cannot keep pace with the demand. Sago and tapioca are unchanged, and rice is somewhat weaker, though good sales are reported. London advices of the 14th nit. advise the currant market in Patras as steady, and the crop doing well. Two direct steamers are advised as on the berth for Australia. The reports of the sultana crop now coming to hand, advise that though larger than last year the crop will be below an average. The same advices apply to elemes and figs. The maize market iB steady at 2s 3d for prime, and fair supplies have come to hand, though llot sufficient to meet with the Australian demand, which is still maintained, though the tone of the market there is not quite so firm as last week, owing to American quotations having been received for September at 2s 3£d to 2s 4£d c.i.f. Sydney, and more favourable reports coming to hand from the country districts. Wheat shows almost no change on last week, and the same remark applies to flour. Bran and pollard are somewhat easier in price, owing to the falling-off of the Australian demand, where the spring weather is bringing on green feed very rapidly. Oats are quiet at last quotations, and the market is well supplied. Considerable shipments have been made from Southern ports jo Sydney and Loudon, and some inquiry is now being experienced from Melbourne. Onions have fallen to from £3 to £3 10s for ordinary, and prime are almost unprocurable.

Potatoes stand at £2 to £2 5s for good table Varieties, and the market is well supplied. In seed business, there has been a little more doing, as formers are now putting in their spring sowings. Manure? are also moving off a little more freely. The Agricultural Department has detained several lines of bonedust Tecently landed from Australia, on account of some doubt as to their having been subjected to the required temperature of 250 degrees Fahrenheit, or a steam pressure of 301b indicated for at least two hours. Steps are being taken to prove the position in the interests of the farming community. ° Preserved meats are very firm, and good demand is being experienced by packets, both for local and export trade, more especially for the Islands, which generally draw a large quantity of their supplies from Australia, but this season are finding that prices there ate mtioh higher in consequence of the great scarcity of live stock. Latest Sydney advices show that cattle ore fully £1 per head higher, and sheep from lis 6d to 2s per head higher than ten days ago. This advance, coupled with the increased cost of tin plates, has materially/ increased the cost of production, and compelled packers to raise their prices. * '• In the local produce market, the price of eggs has ' again declined. At present the prices are:—Farmers' butter Bd, and second quality 5d lb wholesale. Eggs aro 6d dozen wholesale,.'and 8d dozen retail. / ' . / -i vi
