The Northern Company s steamer Wellington arrived from Wliangarei yesterday afternoon with passengers and general cargo anil leaves for the same place again to-night. Yesterday the steamer Stella arrived from Wharekaw'a with a raft of logs. . THE UMTA. The British India Company's steamer Umta is expected to arrive to-day from Calcutta and Singapore, and on discharge of cargo proceeds direct to Wellington. THE TE ANAU. The Union Company's steamer Te Anau. Captain John Bernech. arrived from Southern and East Coast porta yesterday afternoon. The steamer left Dunedin on the 18th inst., and called at Lyttelton. Wellington. Napier, and Gisborne, leaving the latter port at 10 a.m. on the 23rd. and arriving at 12.30 p.m. yesterday. Experienced fine weather and smooth seas throughout the passage. The To Anau leaves for East Coast and Southern ports at noon to-morrow.

THE KAWAU. The official trial trip of the new steamer Kawau, built by Mr. E. Logan, sen., to the order of Mr. Hicks Boss, for the Auckland-Mang?.»'ai-Kawau trade, is to take place on Monday afternoon next. THE TAIEBI. The Union Company's steamer Taieri was floated into the Auckland Dock yesterday for cleaning and painting. As soon as the steamer's overhaul is completed she proceeds to Fiji to load raw sugar for Auckland. THE HA WE A. The Union Company's steamer Hawea is to proceed from the Bluff tc Westport to load coal for Auckland, and is expected to leave Westport on Monday next.

THE MOOBABOOL'S BECOBD. Messrs. Huddart-Parker's new s.s. Moorabool has made a. record voyage from Newcastle to Newcastle, via Adelaide. Captain Walter Hiperave reports leaving Newcastle for Adelaide 011 Friday, July 28, at 12.20 p.m., arriving at Adelaide at 9.30 a.m. 011 the 2nd inst., discharged 4500 tons of coal, and 500 tons of coke, and left for Newcastle on the sth, at 9 a.m.; arrived in Newcastle on Wednesday, the Sth. at 1.30 p.m.. making from Newcastle to Neivcastlo 12 days 1 hour. Cnn'-'in ffipgrave speaks in the highest terms of " sea-going qualities and speed, averaging 11 knots from Wilson's Promontory, on a consumption of 16 tons of coal per day.

INSURANCE OF THE OCEANIC . The owners of the largest, merchantman afloat, the White Star Oceanic, were said to tie insuring that mammoth steamer with Lloyd's when the mail just received closed. The report says The new White Star liner Oceanic is now being insured at Lloyd's, and with the companies. She is valued at- £500.000. of which amount the owners will run £150,000 uninsured. As far as the placing of the insurance has yet gone, it has been effected . at 55s per cent, for the 12 months, free from ' particular average unless" the damage is occasioned by stranding, shilling, burning, or being in collision.

AN UNUSUAL CEREMONY. An unusual ceremony took place the other day at the port of Camden. Maine, when the launch of the new ionr-master schooner Anna Murray, of 3000 tons, took place. The Anna Murrav is intended for the trade between New York and the West Indies. Instead of being christened in the ordinary fashion, she was anointed with oil and holy water by Bishop Healey, of Portland, Maii'e, with Ills full retinue of acolytes and altar boys, incense, regular vestments, etc. It is said the ceremony was the same as that at which the caravels of Christopher Columbus were consecrated. The ritual of baptism was performed with due solemnity.

THE NORTH LYELL. The new steamer North Lyell, purchased by the Union S.S. Company for their Sydney and Tasmanian trade, has proved ft great attraction at Hobart. She was built at ft cost of 60.000. steams 13 knots all hour, carries a large cargo, and has accommodation for 100 first-class and 75 second-class passengers. The saloons are on the upper deck, and the whole of the hurricane and boat decks have been mado available for promenades.
