OLD AGE PENSIONS.
CARRIED IN VICTORIA. By Telegraph.—Press Association-Copyright Melbourne, August 23. The Premier, in moving the second reading of the Old Age Pensions Bill, estimated that about 10.000 people would have to be provided with pensions. About £150,000 would be required. He proposed to raise funds by reducing the income tax exemptions from £200 to £100, by abolishing the exemptions on incomes over £500, by lowering the probate duties exemption to £1000. This, he estimated, would realise about £90,000, and the balance could be provided out of revenue. He was warmly commended for the scheme, which was well received by the House. The Bill was read a second time by 54 votes to 28, and passed the remaining stages amid cheers.
