ELECTORAL NEWS.
BAY OF ISLANDS. I A Kaeo correspondent writes: —The electors | of Kaeo were highly favoured on August 12, ' when Mr. N. A. McLeod, candidate for the i Bay of Islands electorate, gave his political I speech in Mr. Jacentho's Hull. There was: a very large attendance, and the fair sex showed to advantage. Mr. Jas. Halliday 1 was fleeted to the chair. Mr. McLeod, in j his opening remarks, made mention that he 1 was a lawyer, and many objected to lawyers , in the House, but he hoped that the electors had overcome that notion. He went into , full detail of the present political state of New Zealand. Referring to our present educational system, he advocated a colonial scale of salaries, classification of schools, and modification of the standard system, ; by taking into account on examination marks awarded by the teacher throughout the year. , Mr. McLeod's address lasted nearly three hours. He is a very able and eloquent : speaker, and held the close attention of his! audience, and was highly appreciated. At, the close lie received a hearty vote of thanks, : with applause. . Muir proposed a vote of confidence. On a show of hands being taken, the vote of confidence was defeated by a majority of one, and that of thanks was carried.
