WELLINGTON NEWS NOTES.
[DT TELEGRAPH. —OWN COIIIIESPONDENT.] Wellington', Saturday. LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. The la to Mr. Downie Stewart was the last of the Legislative Councillors appointed for life. It is stated that besides the vacancy created by his death the term of the first batch of Councillors appointed under the seven years' tenure will shortly expire, It already stated that this first "call" includes no less than 12 members of tho Council who were nominated in 1892. There is a good deal of interest manifested in what may happen when their successors shall be nominated. THE WOOL CLIP. The Railway Department is feeling the want of rolling stock acutely between Wellington and Hawke's Bay to meet the necessities of wool transit between these centres. It appears that the inclement weather which lias prevailed here of late, and along the East Coast, has delayed shearing. Now that fine weather has commenced there is a rush of wool for export. The railway workshops, it is aHirmed, are engaged night and day turning out new waggons and other rolling stock. THE HINEMOA. The Marino Department has accepted the tender of Messrs. ('-able and Co. for a new funnel and after winch for this vessel. The successful and lowest tender is £310. The unsuccessful tenders were: Luke and Co., £327; Seager, £331; and D. Robertson, £510. LIGHTING RAILWAY CARRIAGES. Lighting with the Pintsch patent gas is likely to be a success. It has been adopted on tho Southern lines with general approval. It is, however, more expensive 'than ordinary coal gas. It is said to be capable for railway cars of giving a 16candle light. Scotch shale oil is the material employed for the manufacture of this light.
