MRS. J. K. BARNEY'S MISSION.

Mrs. J. K. Barney, of Rhode Island, U.S.A., who arrived by the s.s. Mariposa, commenced her mission on Saturday. She Is a worker in connection with the World's Women's Christian Temperance Union and superintendent of the department of prison, police station, and almshouse visitation. On Saturday Mrs 1 . Barney visited the Auckland police station and had a chat with the new lockup matron, and accompanied by the Rev. W. J. Williams went out to see the Costley Home, Epsom, for the aged poor. Application was made to the Minister of Justice (Hon. Thomas Thompson) for an order to visit Mount Eden Prison and the order is expected from Wellington dnily. Yesterday Mrs. Barney delivered a short address on "Christian Work," at the close of the forenoon service in St, John's Weeleyah Church, Potisonby, at the request of the officiating clergyman, the Rev. W. J, Williams. In the afternoon Mrs. Barney gave an address to the Pitt-street Wesleyan Sunday-school, on "The Beginnings of Evil."

Last evening Mrs, Barney preached in the Pitt-street Wesleyan Church to a large congregation, the Rev. W. J, Williams taking the preliminary portion of the service, Her discourse was founded on a sentence in the parable of the Good Samaritan, " From Jerusalem to Jericho." She allegorised the parable by stating that to-day, as of Old, the masses in tho great highway of life—from Jerusalem to Jericho—were being bruised and wounded by the licensed robbers of the liquor traffic, and exhorted her hearers not to play the part of the Levite by "passing by on the other side," but rather that of the Good Samaritan, who rescued the man ready to perish. To-night Mrs. Barney will give an address in Wesley Hall at 7,30, on " Success in Christian Work." The other Meetings will be found in the advertisement elsewhere.
