Dignan, inspector of the Bank of New Zealand, who has been sojourning at Tauranga with his family for some weeks past, returned by the Waiotahi yesterday. Mr. O'Dwyer, raaintainance contractor for part of the Waikareraoana Road, has come in for a windfall lately, he having been left some property in Jersey City, U.S.A., by an uncle. The Rev. Father Hyland, who has been for some time curate at Ashburton, has been appointed parish priest of Hoss, on the West Coast. Bis Ashburton congregation have presented him with a cheque for £60. Three well-known Wanganui residents, Messrs. George R. Beard, Peter Harrison, and Fritz Krull, have determined to test for themselves the possibilities of West Australia, and have left Wellington by the lalune for Sydney. Captain Grant, of the s.s. Takapnna, was unable to leave the Manukau on Monday in charge of his steamer, owing to the serious illness of his youngest child. We regret to learn that Captain Grant's child died yesterday morning at Onehunga. His Grace Archbishop Carr waived an ecclesiastical point in favour of the Rev. Dr. McCay, the popular and liberal Presbyterian clergyman, by allowing tho marriage of his son, Major McCay, the junior M.P. tor Castlemaine, with Mies O'Meara, a staunch Catholic young lady, to take place at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. O'Meara. ' Captain Rosa has decided to £.ccep6 the position of trustee to the Shipmasters' Affochtion daring Captain Babota absence in England. The Wellington Shipmasters' Association have instructed Captain Strang, the secretary, to write to Captain Babot, *?ho shortly leaves for England, thanking him for his valuable services to the Associatrustee, and wishing him a pleasant trip and a safe return. Mr. William D. Watson, the well-known footballer and athlete, was married at o;wki last week to Miss Elizabeth Buick, second daughter of Mr. W. B. Baick. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. C. .Murray, M.A., in the presence of a number of friends. Miss Mary Daysh was bride's maid, and Mr. George Baird best man. Mr. and Mrs. WaUon left on their honeymoon tour to Wellington the same afternoon.

Yesterday afternoon Mr. N. E. Burton was presented by his colleagues on the literary staff of the New Zealand Herald ; with a tea and coffee service, on the oc-n-sioii of his marriage with Miss Sis Faulder. Mr. W. Berry (editor), in making the presentation, said it had been the unanimous wish of the staff that expression should be given to the respect and esteem ii. which Mr. Burton was held, and at the name time to the wishes entertained for bis future welfare and happiness. During the whole of his career Mr. Burton had shown diligence, energy, and anxiety to qualify himself for his duties, and the way in which he had always worked with his colleagues had not been forgotten. The whole of the staff entertained . the highest regard for him, and all joined in tendering him warmest wishes, with hopes for a long and happy life, and success in his profession. Mr. Burton suitably replied. The presentation, which was supplied by Messrs. J. and "J. Dickey, of Queen-street, ; | was ; engraved with Mr. Burton's ,' monogram,and, in addition, bore the following inscription "Presented 'to Mr, K. E. Burton, on i the occasion of his marriage, by bis . colleagues on the literary staff of the New j Zealand Hkbald.
