The subjects selected this year for the Annual Prize Competitions were divided into tiro classes, frizes being offered for the two best stories of a Political and a Mining character respectively. This gave competitors a choice of subjects, ami allowed of a greater scope for style and treatment than in previous years. The number of competitions received was larger than on any previous occasion, and there was a marked improvement in the literary merit of the contributions. POLITICAL STORIES. These stories deal with the latest phases of our Political developments, and will be found of grea interest. The first is an admirably worked-out tale; while the second is a clever attempt to forecast the ultimate outcome of our present system of meddlesome Government, MINING STORIES. The two successful Mining stories will be found to be full of thrilling incidents and romance, and to be typical and characteristic specimens of colonial fiction.
