THE GOLDFIELDS.

i r ' 1, , ' [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] , Thames, Thursday. Sharemarket.—Cambria, . sellers, Is 9d;

Alburnia, sellers, 6s; Victoria,sellers, 2s 6d; Waihi South, sellers, lg 6d j'Waihi Monument,' sales Is ; Monowai,' sales 6s 6d; Kapai-Vermont, sales 93; Puriri,' sales lid; St. Patrick, sellers 7d; Inricba, sellers lOd ; Broken Hill, sellers Is 2d. •. • Victoria.—Mr. Grundy is making good headway in dismantling the winding plant af; the Tookey shaft for removal and erection on the Prince Imperial shaft. The poppet legs were to-day taken down, and taken over to the Prince shaft. The crushing now proceeding for the company appears to be shaping for a return similar to the last one banked. Alburnia.—The drive going east on the course of Dixon's reef at No. 2 level appears to be approaching the junction with the Sons of Freedom reef, as there is now a considerable width of quartz in the face of the drive. It will take a day or two, however, to prove whethor this is the case or nob. Crushing is now proceeding on behalf of the company. Moanataiari.—There is a little improvement to record this week in mostly all the workings in progress in this mine, more gold hating boon seen in the quartz broken than has been the case for some two or three

weeks. No. 4 leader in the topes above the 150-feet level, has especially looked vory well, and strong blotches of gold hare beon seen in it. Colours of gold have also beon observed in the quartz broken from No. 2 reef in the same level, in the etopes going back westward over the old workings. What appears to be the solid ground has been reached at this point, and the reef itself is from two to threo feet in thickness. The drive upon the course of the same body in the level below is still going through old workings, bub the manager anticipates meeting with the solid face shortly. In the workings upon the Golden Age foofcwall loaders, and the Dawn of Hope reef above tho Point Russell level, a vory fair gitde of quartz is now being won, but there is nothing fresh to reporb from the eastern drive on the Golden Age reef. Tho Company's usual monthly retorting is nob likely to take place until Tuesday next. [IiyTELKQRAPH.—OWti CORRESPONDENT.] Paeroa, Thursday. HtJANoi,—Fair progress is being made with the sinking of the winze below the upper level, and a depth of 20 feet has been accomplished. In the bottom of the working the leader shows a thickness of about eight inches, and prospects a little gold. About another 50 feet should solve the problem as to whether tho low level has been carried in on the main leader, as when that distance has been negotiated a connection should be effected with the level, provided, of course, that the main branch has been driven upon. In the level itself operations have been suspended until the winze has been sunk tho required depth. Oceania.—A commencement has been made to pub in the low-level crosscut on the eastern side of the spur, and as the adit is running at right angles to the reef, it should pass through all the reefs traversing the company's property. By 600 or 700 feot of driving something like 500 feet of backs will be available.

School ok Mines.—Mr. George Wilson, Mining Inspector, has during his visit to the up-country mining districts, endeavoured to get the young people interested in the work of the School of Mines, with the result that at Karangahake and Waitekauri the matter of establishing branches of the institution has been energetically taken up, and strong committees have been formed, with a view to giving effect to the desires of tho respective communities, and bringing matters to a successful issue.

[PRIDE OP TOKATEA. SALE NEGOTIATIONS. The manager of the Pride of Tokatoa received yesterday the following cablegram : —" Flotation certain. We write you full particulars." The terms arranged were : English company, 50,000 shares of £1 each ; local company to receive 20,000 shares fully paid up and £2000 cash; working capital of £17,500 to be provided by English company. GRACE DARLING. In reference to the negotiations for floating the Grace Darliug property, the directors have received from London the following cablegram " Offer is under consideration on an increased price on the price offered previously, and property should not be withdrawn. The market is very dull and "unsettled." The reference to the property not being withdrawn was in answer to a cable from the directors, who wished to withdraw the property in order to take advantage of another offer that has been made.

MONOWAL By last night's boat, Mr. W. R. Bloomfield, Chairman of the Monowai Company, returned from an inspection of tho mine, and of the process for the reduction of the refractory ore being carried oub under the supervision of Mr. French. In view of the shareholders meeting, to be held on Saturday, and also ofthe fact that he had not the an opportunity of meeting his co-directors, Mr. Bloomfield preferred to say nothing, beyond that he was as satisfied as to the success of the process as ever he was; when the 100 tons resolved upon to be tested had been tested to its full, then details would be available. Work had to some extent retarded by the vile state of the roads recently, which had prevented the carting of ore to the plant. Asked as to whether Mr. French was still confident, Mr. Bloomfield replied, "perfectly." I asked him if he was not coming up to Auckland for a few days, and he replied, "I am not coming to Auckland until I bring with me the bars of gold, silver, and copper I promised." A gentleman who was with Mr. Blorafield, and who has had expert experience in South Africa, described the plant erected as having been evidently designed by a man who knew his business. GOLDEN ANCHOR. A meeting of shareholders in the Golden Anchor was held yesterday afternoon at the rooms of the Chamber of Commerce. The meeting was called to consider propositions—(l) that the capital of the company be increased to £15,000 by the creation of 90,000 new shares of 2s each, nil paid up ; (2) that the directors be empowered to acquire the Jessica and also the interests of applicants for surplus ground. Mr. M. Niccol presided. There was it good attendance of shareholders personally, but, after some waiting, the chairman announced that only about 30,000 shares were represented, whereas the Act required two-thirds of the total, viz,, 40,C00. A report had been received from Mr. Goldsworthy, and the amalgamation only required to be effected to carry out the recommendations. Mr. Goldsworthy said he did not know of any property in Kuaotunu that had better prospects. There had been unavoidable delay in regard to title and other matters, but these had now been (settled. It was agreed to adjourn the meeting for a week. HINEMOA. A meeting of Hinemoa shareholders was to have been held yesterday, in the office of Mr. Charles Grosvenor. In the unavoidable absence of the representative of Southern subscribers, the meeting was adjourned. FOUR-IN-HAND. Mr. D. G. MacDonnell received the following telegram yesterday from Mr. Charles WaldronFour-in-Hand : Struck top of leader and gold, stripping footwall. BUNKER'S HILL The following telegram from Mr. Harrison, mine manager, to Mr. J. H. Harrison, legal manager of the Bunker's Hill, was received yesterday Small leador or seam, carrying good walls cut in main face; letter posted explaining. . general mining items. It is stated that tho reef in the Broken Hill is improving, being very friable, and the ore of a less refractory nature. It is notified elsewhere that 10,000 of the reserved shares of the Mangakara Gold Mining Company are offered to the shareholders, under certain conditions; also, that those who have nob pad for tho sharos set against their names in the company, will be placed on the forfeit list, aftor the 4th December.
