SPORTING.

THE AUCKLAND RACING CLUB'S SECOND SPRING MEETING. | [BY PHAETON.] At the time of writing matters from a meteorological point of view bear ft very unpromising aspect for the holding of the second day of the A.R.C. Spring Meeting to-day, and even if the weather does clear up the race traok will have been put in such a heavy state by the downpour that the character of the sport will be much affected. The programme to be gone through consists of eight events, the opening one of which is the Spring Handicap. St. Laura should have a deal to say in the settlement of the question, but the heavy state of the going will favour the light weights, and Pororua and Miss # Nelson should finish well up. The issue 111 the Hurdle Race is pretty open, Bonovoree must be voted very dangerous, but it would not surprise me to find Ladybird and ' Belmont home in the van. Armilla and St. Paul appear to me to stand out the most likely pair to fight out the issue in the Nursery Handicap. With 71b the best of the weights, St. Panl should set the daughter of Castor a stiff task to again finish in front. There was quite that difference between the pair in the Musket Stakes; but the heavy state of the going may assist Sc. Paul to reverse places with Ins opponent. Everyone admits that Blarney has been treated with great leniency by Mr. vett; and on paper the City Handicap certainly appears to be at the mercy of the Apreraont gelding. A field of eight is promised for the Steeplechase, and the issue is very open. If Bombardier gets round in safety he will be about at the finish, but the Brigadier gelding is unfortunate over this course, and I *m therefore tempted to name Ika as a probable i Winner. In the Maiden Plate Lady Agues and Retaliation read as well as anything, and the former may win. The Ellerslie Handicap is to a great extent dependant on previous running; but Hazelmere should have something to say in the finish. The following are the acceptances for the various eventsi
