Donkdin, Wednesday. A single man named James Finney, a miner, aged 60 years, fell over a 30 feet precipice afc Mace town, near Arrowtown, on Monday night. He was found the next morning in a dying state, and taken to the local hospital, where he died to day. At the Supreme Court today William Wintrip claimed £1500 damages from Mitchell, Warren, and others, for damages sustained, owing to the negligence of the defendants, Mitchell and Warren, as trustees for Mary Brodie and others, owners of a section in Rattraystreet. Wintrip, who was in the employ of the Corporation contractor, was engaged clearing the street when a branch of a tree in the section was blown down, striking him and rendering him helpless for life The tree was a large blue gum 60 feet high, and had been ringed. The only question submitted to the jury was that of damages, and they gave a verdict for £550. The question of whether defendants are liable, will be argued out before the judge alone. Mr. Justice Williams allowed the appeal in the case in which George Alves had been convicted by Mr. Rawson, S.M., Invercargill, on an information charging him with obtaining £8 by false pretences, and ordered the conviction to be quashed. The benevolent trustees held an inquiry yesterday in connection with the allegations made against Inspector Favell by Mrs. Howie. Waving heard evidence, they were unanimously of opinion bhab the charges had entirely broken down, and were satisfied that the inspector is quite blameless in the whole matter. ;

Wellington, Wednesday. Spencer George Radford, importer, was charged to-day by the Customs with importing nine packages .containing goods not corresponding with the entry thereof, for which the Customs claimed £100 penalty. The case was adjourned till Wednesday. Christohorch, Wednesday. At the Magistrate's Court today, Hugh Sutherland, tobacconist, was fined £1 and costs for keeping his shop open on the halfholiday. An application has been lodged in the Supreme Court for a mandamus to compel the Registrar-General to put Mr. A. B. Worthington on the li«b of officiating ministers under the Marriage Act. It will come before Mr. Justice Denniston at the next sittings in banco. OamarD, Tuesday. Ab the annual meeting of the athletic football club, it was unanimously decided to instruct delegates bo the Otago Kugby Union to vote for affiliation bo the New Zealand Rugby Union. , ~,
