The returns of the number of horses and mules possessed by the various branches of the British army at home and abroad lasb year showed that during the twelve months the average total was 26,730, of which 14,869 were on the British establishment, and 11,831 on the Indian ; while on January Ist this year the actual number was 27,130, or 912 more than the next highest total on any corresponding date within the previous twenty years, and 1194 more than on January Ist, 1893.
