THE CABLE GUARANTEE.
VICTORIA'S ATTITUDE.
Press Association.— Telegraph.—Copyright.
London, January 7. The action of Victoria in wishing to withdraw from the cable guarantee causes some anxiety in commercial circles, and an increase in the tariff is inevitable if the agreement is broken. Inquiries as to the probable obligation of the colonies this year show that not more than £7000 will be required , therefore the action of the Victorian Government is considered to be unjustified. Should the cable tariff be increased it is likely to affect the wiring of market quotations for Australian produce and mining ventures.
