A deputation of shopkeepers will wait on the Minister of Labour on Monday, asking if under the Shop Assistants Act clerks engaged in shops are to come nnder the definition of ordinary clerks and cease work at five o'clock, or be classed as assistants, enabling them to work until six o'clock. Gisborne, Friday. By five to four the Borough Council decided to fix VVednesday as the day tor the weekly half holiday. • Palmerston North, Friday. Harry MeLaughian was to day committed for trial at the Wellington Supreme Court, on a charge of attempting to steal a gold watch and chain from Dr. Satoer, on the Mana Racecourse. Greymouth, Friday. An old miner named Tom Millikin committed suicide at Dutigtinville last night by blowing his brains out. CHRisTCHtjRCH, Friday. Mr. D. Buddo, M.H.R. for Kaiapoi, addressed a meeting of his constituents last evening. He received a vote of thanks and confidence. An expression of confidenca in the Government was also passed. Dunkdin, Friday. The Taieri County Council has resolved to retrench by reducing the wages of kUrfacemen 6d per day, members travelling expenses by one-half, and clerk and inspector's salaries by £'25 per annum each. An effort is to be made to gee the interest on the overdraft reduced. St. Paul's Parish Church was formally taken over this evening by Bishop Neville, and will in future be the cathedral. Dean Fitchett and tho canons were then installed.
