London, January 3, The fire which broke out in a city laundry, a three-storeyed building spread with such rapidity that the whole place was enveloped in flames in a few minutes, and the inmates were unable to escape, while it was impossible to render them any assistance from outside.
The owner of the establishment and eight employees lost their lives. Thousands of people witnessed the fire, but were powerless to assist the unfortunates confined in the burning building. When the flames were subdued two charred and distorted, bodies were seen hanging from one of the rafters.
[Six fire brigades were at work, and had great difficulty in saving the inmates of the adjoining premises.
