BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The fortnightly meeting of the Board of Education was hold in the Board's rooms, Victoria Arcade, yesterday. There were present—Messrs. R. Udy (chairman), S. Luke, Muir, Lambe, Cooper, Moat, Grant.

Finance.-—The Board's bank balances to date were read, as follow: — Education Fund, credit, £1027 Ss 3d (exclusive of £2000 in fixed deposit) buildings fund, debit, £2754 03 3d, Dr. balance, £1726 12s; Girls' High School, credit, £17 18s Id. Chairman's Report.—The report of the chairman, which was read and adopted, contained the following items:—Schools closed : The following schools have been closed, owing to the prevalence of epidemics : —Driving Creek, Kuapekapeka East, Utakura Valley, VVaikare. Ahuroa : Complaint from the committee as to the closing of the school has been referred to the teacher for explanation. East Tamaki: Tenders have been invited for the erection of school building for No. 2 School. The committee have also been informed that the state of asphalb at No. 1 school ground will be attended to by architects. Fairburn's Road : Complaints from Messrs. Christunsen and Whitehead as to alleged disqualification of members of committee, have been referred to the committee for their report. Huntly : Committee have been again asked what proportion of the cost of repairs will be contributed by the district. Kohukohu: Committee have been informed that no substitute can be sent during temporary absence of head-teacher. Maramarua : Mr. Mclnness has been referred to condition of grant for removal and re-erection of school building. Orewa: Mr. Jack has been asked for usual information regarding establishment of schools. Te Mata : Committee have been authorised to accept the lowest tender for fencing, and the owner of the adjacent property has been called upon to contribute towards cost. Titirangi : The attention of the committee has been called to the inspector's report of state of shelter shed, and of approaches to closets. Tryphena: The committee have been authorised to provide lamps for school building at cost of school fund. Waikomiti : The attention of the committee has been called to the inspector's report of state of fencing and approaches to closots. Whareora; Committee have been asked for particulars of charge for removal of school furniture to Huanui. Woodhill: Committee have been referred to conditions of grant for school

library. Teachers.— resignation of Mr. J. F. Dixon, assistant, Newmarket School, has been received. Temporary arrangements have been made as follow :—Miss G. _ E. Barlow to Devonport, pending the appointment of an assistant teacher ; Mr. H. (i. Cousins to Romuera in absence of assistant master. • Miss Elizabeth H. Floyd to Cambridge in absence of pupil teacher. Leave of Absence.—The report of the chairman stated that leave of absence had been granted to six teachera on account of sickness.

French Journal of Primary Education.

—Mr. Grant suggested to the Board that a copy of the above journal including timetable, should be obtained for the use of the teachers and inspectors. The suggestion was adopted. Otaiiuiiu.— A deputation consisting of Messrs. R. Dick and T. Whiteley waited upon the Board with reference to the removal of Miss Harding from the Otahuhu School. The deputation asked that Miss Harding might remain at the school. Consideration of this matter was held over until the end of the year. Tenders.— tender of Mr. McLean for the supply of school clocks was accepted. Painting. —A list of school buildings to be painted was brought before the Board. The chairman stated that these buildings were painted every five years. The work was ordered to be done. Establishment of Schools.— Edendale: The question of the establishment of a new school at Edendale was discussed. Correspondence was read from the Mount Eden, Mount Roskill, and Mount Albert < committees protesting againsb the erection of the school. Mr. Grant moved, "that unless tho Mount Albert committee consent to open a school in the district, when the Board consider it necessary, a new district must be created for Edendale." This resolution was carried. Oreti: An application was received from the residents for tho establishment of a new school. The application stated that there was not the required number of children in the district. It was decided that if the Inspector reported favourably the Board would establish an aided school. Herkkino.—An application was received for teachers' house. Mr. Muir moved that the report of the Inspector be forwarded to the committeo. Pakia.— application was made for improvements of the school at an estimated cost of £38. The matter was referred to the Inspector. Totaka.— The committee made application to the Board for a new school. On the motion of the Chairman the matter was re-

ferred to the inspector. Waiweba.— An application for a new school was referred to the inspector for the district. Arapaua.— The committee applied to the Board to have the school ground fenced ab an estimated cost of £17. The architect suggested that portion of the ground be fenced at a cost of £7. The question was referred to the inspector. Grafton Road. —The Grafton Road Committee complained that certain works proposed had nob been carried out. On the motion of Mr. Muirib was decided to attend to the work at once. Hamilton West.—An application was received for the re-fencing of the school ground and other improvements, at an estimated cost of £73 13s 6d. On the motion of Mr. Grant it was decided to ask the committee what amount they would be

prepared to contribute. Kamo.—Tho committee forwarded an account of £19. The chairman stated that the work had been done without the authority of the Board. The matter was referred to the architect. Mr. Lambe asked what the usual practice of the Board was iu such cases. The chairman said ib was invalid. There had been several cases of the kind lately brought before the Board, and the committees had been warned, "• .

Kauaeranga Boys' School.—The question of raising the school ab this place was considered. Mr. Lambe moved that the work be done. There were 400 children ab bhe school, and ib was rigbb, for sanitary reasons, thab the Board should do the work. He bhoughb bhab bhe Board was nob giving sufficient attention to these matters. The chairman said there were several schools in the same locality in as bad a condition. After considerable discussion, Messrs. Lambe, Grant, and Muir were deputed to visit these schools, and report upon their sanitary condition. Newton West. —The committee applied to the Board for the payment of £65. The Chairman stated that the Board had granted a certain sum for the erection of an iron wall. The committee offered to carry out the work if bhe Board found the money, as they could do ib cheaper. The amounb given by the Board was' £275. The committee now claimed the sum of £65 for extras on contract and moneys due to the clerk of works and the engineer. Considerable discussion took place on the matter. -On the motion of Mr. Cooper, it was decided " Thab bhe extras and the amounb of the engineer's claim be paid, bub the committee be asked to give further details with regard to the amount claimed for clerk of works, and ask who he was, why he was appointed, and ab whab salary." Otonga.— committee made application for improvements to be made to their school ground at an estimated cost of £34. Ib was decided bo ask the committee how much ground was already fenced, and whab would be bhe co3b of completing the fencing. Parkhurst.The Board were asked to give their sanction for a road to be taken through the playground. The matter was referred to the inspector. Ponsonby/—Mr. C. S. Wright, chairman of the Ponsonby District School, wrote asking the Board to contribute three-quarters of the cost towards improvements that were needed to the Richmond Road School grounds. The cost was estimated to be about £100. The Board decided to offer two-thirds of the amount.

Wayby.— The committee wrote .asking the Board to reconsider its previous decision with regard to payment for work that had been done by them without the sanction of the Board. The matter was referred to the architect. Mr. Muir moved that a circular be sent to all the committees notifying them that the Board will not hold themselves responsible for any work that has beon done without their sanction. This was seconded by Mr. Luke and carried. Mangoniti.—Correspondence was read in relation to the closing of the school during the late epidemic. Mr. Grant said he bhoughb that teachers should nob be allowed to leave their districts although the school mighb bo closed. No action was taken in the matte!-.

Woodhill.—The committee wrote asking the Board to supply books for the native children attending the school. The Board referred the matter back to the commitbee, and asked if bhe parenbs of the children were nob in a position to purchase the books.

Grants for Repairs.—Small amounts were granted for repairs to the following schools : —Mangere, Mauku Wesb, Maungatapere, Northcote, Pukete, Pungaere, Te Aroha, Toka Toka, Warkworth, Whangarei, Woodhill, and Te Kopuru. Fencing School-grounds.-— Cooper asked thab the motion standing in his name, " Thab in future the whole cost of the necessary fencing of school-grounds in country districts be allowed to stand over for a month." The Board acceded to the request. University Examination.—An application was received from William Andrew Pilkington asking for one week's leave of absence in order to attend the University examination. The chairman said that there would probably be a great many similar applications from teachers. The Board decided to grant the application subject to the provisions laid down in the report of the Finance Committee. Appointments.—The following appointments were made by the Board :—Mr. Cox to Okaihau, Mr. Gillinj? to Ahuroa, Miss P. A. Young to Maunu, Mr. W. Kay, assistant, to Wellesley-street, Miss Hould to Devon port. Accounts. —A large number of accounts were passed for payment.
