SAN FRANCISCO MAIL SERVICE.
DECISION OF THE IMPERIAL 1 GOVERNMENT. REFUSAL TO RENEW THE ,1 SUBSIDY. 1 . Prut AssoetaHon.~~Eleetrie Telegraph.—Copyright ~ London, November 2.' Mb. Arnold Moeley, Postmaster-Gene-ral, has definitely refused to renew the San Francisco mail contract. " r The Postmaster-General, in a letter to the Agent-General of New Zealand, regrets the decision of the Treasury regarding the San Francisco mail service. At the same time he denies that the service is an absolute necessity from ' an Imperial standpoint, but says that it is one which the colony should reasonably provide if satisfied of its requirements. _. • [BY TELEGRAPH.— OWN CORRESPONDENTS.) Wellington, Thursday. The refusal of the Imperial postal authorities to contribute to this service provokes a good deal of comment. The Post concludes a leader on the subjeot as follows :—" This colony certainly cannot afford to make up to them the lose of the Imperial contribution, and New South Wales, it is quite certain, will nob do so. It has already agreed to increase its contribution to £4000, which ra&y in some degree com* pensate the contractors for the loss of the Imperial contribution. The probability, however, is that the San Francisco service will be abandoned as soon as the Chicago Exhibition season is over; if indeed the contractors think it worth their while to continue it until then."
