THE GOLD FIELDS.
[FROM OUR own correspondent.] Thames, Tuesday. Crawford's Special. —as a result of the agitation that has been carried on here by local people who had agreed to take up shares in the company which was recently j endeavoured to be floated to take over this ground, the promoters have decided to refund the application money that was paid at that time, and the money is now available, upon presentation of receipts at the Bank of New Zealand. It is currently reported hero that the Bank of New Zealand are about to man the ground on its own account, as the protection recently granted by the Warden expires on Thursday next. Ua/.elbank.— What is now known as Darby's leader, in the footwall of the cross reef at No. 1 level, still continues to carry most favourable prospects, and hopes are entertained that it will eventually lead 011 to something good. It is now opened up for a length of about 30 feet, and has ranged from 10 to 12 inches in thickness, and" altogether about 201b of very good picked stone has been obtained from it. The best prospects, however, have been met with in the floor of the drive, where it also makes stonier than at the top, consequently it is probable a winze may be started shortly to prove its quality downward, or else a start made to crosscut for it from the intermediate level below. Operations upon the footwall leader at the intermediate level are proceeding as usual, but the quartz won is but of medium grade, although a little gold is seen at times. Very fair progress is being made with the opening up J No. 2 intermediate.
