LICE CO —Saturday. [Before Dr. Giles, R.M.j Drunkenness.—Three lir.st- offenders were fined 5s and costs each, or, in default, '24 hours' imprisonment. John Symonds, for being an habitual drunkard, was sentenced to one month's imprisonment, with hard labour. Vagrancy.—Annie Locke was charged with having no visible lawful means of support. Inspector Broham said that this girl and another had been sleeping in the Domain since Monday last. Her father was a fireman on board the s.s. Clansman, but refused to have anything to do with accused, who was leading a bad life. Inspector Broham asked for a remand in order that he might consult the girl's father. Tlio case was remanded till Tuesday next. Alleged Assault.—David Stewart was charged with unlawfully assaulting Jane McMatius by striking her on the head with a bottle on the Kith of May. Mr. Brassey appeared on behalf of the defendant, and asked that the case should be withdrawn. Inspector Broham said the informant was evidently unwilling to give evidence, and did not think that it would be worth while to compel her to do so. Dr. Giles said that as the case had been remanded twice, it would nob be fair to detain the defendant any iongcr, and dismissed t he case. Alleged Larceny.—Brov Gustaf Lindall was charged that 011 May IG, at Te Koa, near Mangonui, he did feloniously steal two cheques valued at £20 lis Sd, the property of Askild Hatland. On the application of Inspector Broham, this case was remanded to Mangonui. Maintenance Care.— Samuel Johnson was charged with having failed to comply with an order of the Court for the maintenance of his wife Cecilia Johnson. Mr. Matthews appeared on behalf of the complainant, and stated that he would ask for an adjournment, in order to show that the defendant had property. Samuel Johnson stated that he had just come out of gaol, and was out of employment. He did have property some time ago, bub his wife knew best where that was.
