VOLUNTEER INTELLIGENCE.
PON'SON'BY NAVAL ARTILLERY. The Ponsonby Naval Artillery fired two matches on Saturday afternoon, namely, one for Hon. Lieutenant Whiteley's medal (handicap), which was won by First-class P.O. George E. Spinley (with the good score of 77 points) for the third time, and it now becomes his own property. The other match was the lirst of two for the company's belt, which should have been fired for three months ago, but, from various cause?, such as the range having been occupied for other purposes, and the company having other engagements on their range days, it has been delayed until now. The following are the principal scores for both events :— MEDAL MATCH. 2l)fiycl 000 yd 500 yd Han'p T1 P.O. O. E. Spinley .. 28 28 21 scr. —77 P.O. J.Ewan .. .. ->i 19 23 scr. -- 05 P.O. Jno. The annual match between the above eorps took place on Saturday afternoon, the two teams drove up to the Mount Eden range in breaks, provided by the Battery, about one o'clock, and commenced the match straight away. The conditions of the match were five shots each at 2, 3, 4, and 500 yards, one sighting shot at each range. On the whole the shooting was very good, some big scores being made. At the finish of the 200 yards range the Artillery were 12 points ahead, which lead they increased at every range, finally winning by 108 points. At the close of the match Captain Geddes called on the Battery to give three cheers for the visitors, which were heartily given and responded to by the Wairoas. This is the fifth annual competition which has now taken place between these two friendly companies. In two of these the Battery won, and in two others the Wairoas were the victors, while the third was a draw, so that they now stand on equal terms. Next competition will be held at Wairoa South. The following are the scores :— WAIROA RIFLES' TEAM.
