COMMERCIAL.

New Zealand Herald Office, Saturday evening. Messrs. Sammann and Gristede, of Breman, reports to their Now Zealand representative, Mr. Louis Rother, Wellington, as below :— Sugar market: Continental market steady. Large parcels are still changing hands. United States market: Owing to the practical monopolisation of the whole refinery business by the sugar trust, prices for the refined article have been forced up considerably. Kerosene market: Oil has further declined in price. The market is weak.

THE PRODUCE MARKETS. [from our own correspondent.] London, April 16. Wool. —When the second series of wool auctions were suspended for the Easter recess, the market, viewed all round, occupied a firm position. It will be remembered that the opening of the sales marked a decline of about live per cent, for merino growth, but, after a few days, French and German buyers began to extend their operations, and the upward movement, supported by the more favourable position of the Continental " ternie" markets, has since continued to develop, and medium Australian merino in the grease now marks an appreciation of fully 15 per cent., as compared with closing February rates. Scoured merino commands attention on the pare of home and Continental buyers, and for fine clothing sorts, eager competition is elicited at extreme rates. With the progress of the sales increasing attention was paid to coarse and medium crossbreds. Fine crossbred and superior merino wool, suited to American wants, sell relatively cheaper than lower descriptions, but crossbred lambs being in small supply, are in brisk demand, at full rates. The same remark applies to choice merino lambs free from fault, but in medium and faulty sorts little improvement is noticeable.

Prospects of the autumn-sown crops, both here and on the Continent, have been materially improved by the fine weather which has prevailed during the greater part of the past month, while the early spring sowing has been satisfactorily accomplished. The "spot" market has throughout the month been extremely dull; and quotations at the close mark a depreciation of from 3s to 4s per quarter on the month. Extreme depression has on the whota characterised the c.i.f. market. For New Zealand cargoes, of which there have been several offering, there has practically been no inquiry, and while quotations in all positions are consequently quite nominal, values may be said to be fully 3.3 per 4801b lower than at date of our last issue. Only one sale on c.i.f. terms has been reported m Australian wheat, namely, a parcel of 1000 quarters disposed of " on passage" at 3Gs per 4801b.

Oats. —Arrivals from New Zealand have continued to be on a liberal scale, but although the inquiry has not, on the whole, been brisk, values for prime qualities have been fairly well maintained. Other descriptions, however, have tended in buyers' favour. At the close the market shows some improvement, and holders generally are asking rather more money. Barley. For New Zealand descriptions thero has been little or no demand—a circumstance in great measure attributable to the large deliveries of English descriptions, which have been offered at relatively very low prices. Flour.Business very quiet, with prices ruling downwards. Tailow.—There have been no consignments of the best brands of New Zealand mutton on offer, and the demand for fine Australian mutton has been weak, prices showing a declino of from 3d to Ikl per cwt for the four weeks. The best brands of beef of good body have been much in request, and for this description prices have advanced from 3d to 6d per cwt. Sales of fine edible beef have been effected at 20s 6d per cwt. The medium and lower grades of all Sorts have throughout been slow of sale, present quotations exhibiting a decline of from 3d to 9d per cwt as compared with those ruling a month ago. Rabbit Skins.—Latest quotations : Good to prime New Zealand, averaging ISlbs to 2,}lbs per dozen, Is 4id to Is 62d per lb; fair ordinary to good New Zealand skins, 1 Albs to 2Jlbs per dozen, lsO./d to is 3i'd per lb." Kauri Gum.— the sale on the 7th inst., only 219 packages were- sold out of 1081 offered. The biddings showed signs of a downward tendency. Fine pale, selected, £8 15s to £15 per cwt; clean, hard, good to fine, chiefly amber, £5 15s to £9 15s; hard, three-parts scraped, fair to fine, £4 15s to £5 78 6d.

New Zealand Hemp.—Stooka in first hands very reduced. Prices exhibit a decline during the month of from 15s to 20s per ton. Froze* Meats.—The demand for frozen mutton has been by no means active throughout the month, and arrivals having been on « heavier scale than for some time past, Quotations have undergone a reduction of fully Jd per lb. During the month frozen lambs have likewise met a rather restricted inquiry, and it has been necessary to accept at least id per lb less money for these in order to effect sales. Little demand for frozen beef. To-day's London quotations are aa follow, per stone of 81b :—Prime Scotch mutton (wethers), 4s 8d to 5a ; prime English
