ANGLO-COLONIAL NEWS.
London*, August 21. The Times devotes four columns to a statistical, but otherwise interesting, article on the subject of " New Zealand: Past, Present, and Future." The history of the colony is well and fairly treated by the ■writer, who has evidently selected the best procurable authorities from whom to extract his matter, and the article is one ■which places before the general reader a concise and valuable account of the present conditiop and prospects of the colony. v An extraordinary general meeting of the Kapanga Goldmining Company (Limited) •was held on August 14 at the offices, Dashwood House, Mew Broad-street, E.G., Mr. "W. N. M. St. Aubyn presiding. The ' Chairman said the meeting was called to consider a proposal for an amalgamation with the Coromandel Gold Company (Limited), who were working properties < adjoining their mine, and possessed a large block of ground, about 150 acres, known as the Blagrove Freehold, through which the veins of the Kapanga were known to pas 3. The Coromandel Company would pay nearly £5000, by a call of Is 6d a share, out of which the liabilities of that company would have to be met, amounting to under £1500, and that would leave a good margin for the development of the Coromandel. In conclusion, the Chairman moved : — "1. That the directors be, and they are hereby, authorised and directed to enter into, and carry into effect, a , contract with the Coromandel Cold Company (Limited), and the liquidator thereof, for the purchase and acquisition of all and eingular the mines, hereditaments, lands, mining, water, and other rights, leases, buildings, plant, machinery, stores, and all other property and effects of the Coromandel Gold Company (Limited) of every description whatsoever, for the sum of £60,125, payable in 05,000 shares of the capital of the company, each such share credited with 18s Cd as paid thereon, with power to concur with the Coromandel Gold Company (Limited), and the liquidator thereof, in any modification of the said contract which the directors may consider necessary or expedient. 2. That for carrying into effect the foregoing resolution the capital of the company bo increased to £250,000 by the creation of 65,000 new shares at £1 each." Mr. Henry Wilson seconded the motion, which, after a short discussion, was agreed to, with three dissentients. Everybody has heard of Sir John Lawes and the famous and long-continued wheatgrowing experiments carried on at Rothamstead. Dr. Gilbert has just notified to the New Zealand Agency that half-a-dozen octavo volumes and three quarto volumes have been presented to the School of Agriculture, Canterbury. Dr. Gilbert himself sends a volume, thus making the presentation consist of ten volumes of records on wheat growing and all that appertains thereto, which is certainly quite unique. This gift will be forwarded to its destination by the Agent-General this week. Some • little time ago there appeared in the Standard a sensible and sympathetic article on the overcrowding of [Switzerland. The writer mentioned as alternative fields for the mountain climber the Caucasus and the Himalayas. Mr. Eliot Howard writes to draw attention to other fields, under the British flag, which possess attractions hardly as yet appreciated as they deserve. * New Zealand, he says, is, perhaps, the most beautiful country in theworld, and offers an almost unbounded field of enterprise to the mountain explorer.
