CIIRYSANTIIMUM SOCIETY.
We have to acknowledge tho receipt from Mr. A. E. Dewo?, hon. secretary of the Auckland Chrysanthemum Society, a copy of the second edition of "Directions for the Culture of tho Chrysanthemum, with Hints on Exhibiting. Edited by the Standing Committee." The little publication is got up in a form very handy for reference und perusal, its contents being carefully classified, and a very handy table of con-, tents so arranged as to serve the purpose of an index. It is also illustrated, showing the. method of training in growth, and the various classes of buds to which the grower
lias to give close attention. The little publication deals with the selection of varieties, modes of propagation, soil and situation, manner ol planting out, watering and mulching, manures (solid and liquid), protecting and keeping blooms, staging exhibits of cut blooms, etc. Like all other things grown and prized by man, the chrysanthemum plants are subject to the attacks of various insect enemies, as well as fungoid diseases. Upon these subjects the work before us treats briefly, and gives, instructions to the grower how to overcome the blights against which he has to fight. The green and black flics with which these plants nro liable to be affected may bo destroyed by syringing them with tobacco water alone, or with a
little soft soap added. Persian insect powder dusted on the affected parts is also an effectual method of fighting the enemy. Caterpillars have to be hand picked, though the use of tobacco water and tho Persian insect powder (buckach, as it is called in America) are also very valuable aids. The large black caterpillar, known as the"loafcher jackets," is regarded as the worst enemy the chrysanthemum has in the shape of insect enemies. Mildew, when it appears, has to bo fought with sulphur, as in the calo of grape vines. The society is in a thriving condition, and so long as the public take an interest in the magnificent blooms which have been exhibited hero at different times, there is no doubt there will be found lovers of nature willing to undertake any amount of toil and anxiety to each year produce exhibition blooms surpassing in excellence those of any previous year. We commend the publication to the attention of all those who takea.dolight in the gorgeous blossoms which this plant with skill and culture is capable of producing.
The sudden stoppage of tho Kopuru Mills threw several men out of employment rather unexpectedly. The gumfields being handy, moat of the unemployed turned to them for a living; but, whatever old diggers may do at the gum, it is very certain that many fresh hands will find it scarcely sufficient to thrive on. The uncertainty of employment under the Kauri Company hac long been felt by many who have been on and off at the mills looking for better times. This is now about despaired of, and the hands are likely to shift further afield during the present cessation of work. Some have already gone, others are" going ; some even as far as Sydney.— fAratapu Correspondent.] To thk Ladiks.— If you suffer from irregularities of the stomach, liver, and bowels, try Dr. Soule's Genuine American Hop Bitters.
