m DIFFICULTIES. Sydney, September 24. ' The Mercantile Building Company has suspended payment in consequence of the panic caused by the failure of the Australian Investment Building Company. The authorised capital of the company is £100,000, of which £33,000 is paid up. The reserve amounts to £19,000. According to the last balancesheet, the liabilities were £263,000, including £101,000 of depositors' money. The assets were the same amount, including £133,000 for freehold land and buildings.
THE AUSTRALIAN" MUTUAL BUILDING SOCIETY. Sydney, September 24. The directors of the Australian Mutual Investment and Building Company are confident that they will be able to tide over their difficulty if the depositors will consent to renew their deposits.
THE INFLUENZA IN MELBOURNE Melbourne, September 24. Influenza shows no sign of abatement. There is scarcely a family which has not been visited by it, and business is seriously interfered with.
