COMMERCIAL.

New Zealand Herald Office, Thursday evening. The Customs duties to-day amounted to £2443 14s 7d. Except in .the drapery division, trade exhibits little, if any, improvement. The usual spring season movement has so far been altogetner wanting, and under excellent authorities we find the dulness of the local merchants trade not in any way exceptional to this province, as all over the colony there is the same experience, as if the bottom had tumbled out of the buckets. With a generally lifeless import market, it seems nearly a farce to write reports. The only business passing is that of filling small sorting up orders. Holders welcome advices of advances in rice and cornsucks, but scarcely follow them, as good buyers can, with little difficulty, secure at previous rates. . : . - Tnere are only a very few* lines that command really firm rates. The general tendency is towards weakness. Currants rule firm with demand better. Dried tipples are scarce, and no good fruit is obtainable in the Australian markets. There is a small but improving demand for figs. ' Raw linseed oil is in bare supply with a good demand. Columbia tobacco is again on offer. Derby keeps particularly scarce. Fair average flax has been done at £16 10s per ton, and a higher class at £18 per ton. Maize is in heavy supply. Sales have been made off wharf at 2s and 2s Id. Oats are firm at 2s 2d to 2s 3d, with a prospect of an advance. Potatoes are unquotable. They are in a perfect state of glut. Milling wheat, local and Southern : Few arrivals this week. More exciting war rumours from Europe caused quite a 11 utter in the Melbourne market, when wheat suddenly jumped up 9d per bushel, and Victorian millers advanced the price of flour 40s per ton. As yet, it has made little or no difference in prices either here or in the South Island. Fowl wheat is selling freely^ Seed wheat, sowing is finished around Auckland. Bran is dull of sale, and 5s per ton oheaper. Sharps are slow of sale, and 10s per ton cheaper. Flour : Large orders have been booked this week. In the local produce market the price of eggs remains unchanged, but butter is plentiful and lias fallen Id per pound all round. The prices now are : Best dairy butter, 7d ; second quality, Gd; and third quality, 3d • per lb wholesale. Eggs are (kl per dozen wholesale, and 3d per dozen retail. Mr. R. C. Carr. auctioneer, offered for sale, to-day, the Jdiranda Coal and Iron Company's mines and properties, consisting of the machinery and plant in and about the mine, aUo freehold situated at Bridgewater, containing 1030 acres, on which are manager's dwelling, eight miners' cottages, store, drying house, and other buildings. On the property is a seam of coal over 50 feet thick and bands of ironstone. Mr. Devore bought the property on behalf of the mortgagee for £500. Messrs. Wilson and Clayton offered for sale, to-day, Harbour Board leases of allotments in Quay-street, but no bids were given.
