FIRE IN SHELLY BEACH ROAD.
About half-past four o'clock on Saturday afternoon, an' incipient fire was discovered in the residence of Mr. W. J. Rees, Shelly Beach Road. It appears that the lire originated in a cupboard adjoining the wall of the fireplace in a back scullery winch was used for a kitchen. Mr. Rees was outside the building talking to his wife, when he saw smoke issuing from the cupboard, and at once gave tho alarm. Mr. Upton, his next door neighbour came to his assistance, but they failed to get the fire under, and sent to ring the firebell. Superintendent Hughes and the Fire Brigade arrived, and the fire was suppressed, the damage being confined to the kitchen, which is thoroughly gutted. The damage is estimated at £50. The house, a I'2-roomed one, was insured in the Imperial for £600, and tho furniture in the New Zealand for £200. Mr. Rees is unable to account for the origin of the fire, probably a defective traspipe.
