ASCENT OF RUAPEHU.
A BOILING LAKE. [BY TELEGRAPH. PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Napier, Thursday. A party, including Mr. Hill, Inspector of Schools, a representative of the Hawke's Bay Herald, and several local residents, recently ascended Ruapehu and Ngauruhoe. They had a magnificent view of the crater of the former, and were able to make a closer inspection than any previous explorers. They found the lake in the crater to be boiling furiously—a point which has hitherto been in dispute. It is believed that it has boiled only since the Tarawera eruption. Since then Ngauruhoe has. also been much more active, and in what used to be known as the Black Crater there was an inverted cone of boiling sulphur, with evidences of recent greater activity. •
