A meeting of the local branch of the Gospel Temperance Society was held in the Presbyterian Church, Mmigapai,onthe7th, and was well attended. Mr. Harrison, cudiriuau of the society, occupied the chair. Proceedings were opened by singing and prayers, after which the chairman pave an address, urging oil all parents, especially, to join the society, and thus set an example to their children of sobriety, as they are so apt to follow in the footsteps of their parents, illustrating his statements by suitable anecdotes. Next followed a recitation by S. Graham, "The Weaver Lad;" reading, T. 1). Qrmondy, "Boatmen's Society ;" reading, J. Graham, "Codfish and Oysters;" song, the Misses Weir, Hunter, .and Harrison, ' Drink From - The Well;" reading, D. G. Cole,/' Chambermaid address and song, W. Cook. This was the great event of the evening. Mr. Cook told his own experience of drinking in a most amusing and nighlv instructive manner, keeping the audience all through Ins speech in bursts of laughter. His song. The Bit of Blue," was well rendered, hcxt followed a reading by the chairman, In Amethyst;" recitation, 1. D. Ormondy, " Kelp Each Other reading, D. O. Cole, from Mark Twain mutation, S. Grafiam, " Bad Beginning:" song, W. Cook, lne London Flower Girl." Suitable hymns from San key and Hoyle were sung at intervals, music being supplied by the Misses Weir, Hunter, and Harrison, 'The meeting lastednearly three hours.
