COUNTERFEIT BANK NOTES.
[BY telegraph.FHKSS association.] Nai-iek, Tuesday. A large number of counterfeit Bank of New Zealand notes appear to have been circulated during tho last fow days. At tho last mooting of the Jockey Club one gentlemen in the course of business received six such notes, all of which were returned by the bank with the word " forgery " written across them. The counterfeit notes are splendid imitations of the real article, apparently the result of expert photo-libhograhy, but by careful examination the cheat is easily discovered. Probably because the lens used in the oporution was too small every letter and word on the original note photographed is reproduced in the forgery on a slightly smaller scale. For instance, between the sentence "ono pound" at the top of a genuine note and the same sentence on the counterfeit there is a difference of several lines in depth, and of at least an eighth of an inch in tho full length of the sentence. The counterfeit® are reproductions of ono upon the Chrisbchurch branch of the bank, tho number being "No. C 072912."-
