THE CHEMIS CASE. Sydney, August 21. The Daily Telegraph, commenting on the Chemis case, regrets that Sir I!. Atkinson's suggestion for the appointment of a committee to inquire into the procedure after the trial of such a character was not carried out, and suggests that the Parliament of New South Wales might follow the matter up.
SENTENCE OF DEATH. Melbourne, August 21. Costello, who confessed to having murdered a woman named Annie Thornton, about four weeks ago, stating at the same time in extenuation of his crime that the deed was done in the course of a quarrel between himself and the deceased, has been sentenced to death.
THE CASE OF JUDGE ONSLOW. Perth, August 21. Lord Knutsford has decided that the charges made against Judge Onslow have not been proved, but in order to avoid future friction Judge Onslow is to be appointed elsewhere.
SOUTH AUSTRALIA'S PROSPECTS. Adelaide, August 21. The Financial Statement says the prospects of the colony are exceedingly bright. It is estimated there will be a surplus at the end of the year of £83,000. A new loan is to be floated.
NEW SOUTH WALES DEFICIT. Sydney, August 21. A Bill will be introduced in the Assembly by the Government authorising the issue of £2,600,000 worth of Treasury bills to cover the deficit.
