THE ELAM SCHOOL OF ART AND DESIGN.

MR. PAYTON APPOINTED AS TEACHER.

The trustees of the Elam bequest for the establishment of a free school of artMessrs. S. Jackson, sen., J. M. Clark, and F. R. Claude—met yesterday at the office of Messrs. Jackson and Russell to consider applications for tho position of teacher for the school. Applications were received from the following, in the order in which they are named : —Messrs. J. L. Lines, J. G. Trevethick, J. E. Sladen, E. W. I'ayton, Mary PocklingLon, YV. L. Morison, J. Syinonp, James E. Balshaw, W. E. Robinson, Anne Dobsou, L. .J. Steele, K. Watkins, and J. G. Trevethick (jointly), E. Arnold, and A. E. Gilford. Having considered the testimonials, etc., the trustees appointed Mr. E. W. Pay ton as teacher, duties to commence on the Ist January, 1800. Mr. Pay ton, who is at present in London, is well-known in art circles in Auckland. His certificates are as follows : —Art class teacher's certificate, School of Art, from the committee of the Council of Education, School of Art Department, South Kensington, second grade art examination, freehand model; first-class certificate, second grade examination, geometrical drawing, art course, committee of the Council of Education ; first-class, second grade examination, perspective drawing, committee of the Council of Education ; first-class, third grade, shading from cast, committee of the Council of Education; first-class, third grade, 3b, outline drawing from cast, committee of the Council of Education. He gained first prizes from the Birmingham Society of Arts for work in the following subjects : —Painting of group in still life, oils ; painting of drapery, painting of ornaments in monochrome, copperplate etching. Mr. Payton also holds a lirst prize from the South Kensington Society for landscape in oils.

The salary of the position of master of the Elam school is £200 a year (to commence with), and the duties of the oflice are to teach the following branches :— Drawing, from the round and flat; painting in oil, water colour, and monochrome, from casts, nature, and life ; design, perspective, and geometry, mechanical and architectural drawing. Lectures also are to be given to the pupils upon art subjects.
