FANCY DRESS BALL AT STRAFORD.

The above took place in the Town Hall on the 9tn instant, when the largest assembly of dancers that has yet taken part in an assembly in the district was present, they numuenng between seventy and eighty couples. The f" r ent signalised the closing of the Stratford Quadrille Assembly for the season, and the success which attended their winding up must be gratifying to all concerned. The secretary, Mr. J. Paton, worked well to have all the details thoroughly attended to, and to Mr. Cramer, who acted as M.C., much credit is due. An important item, the supper, was served in first-rate style. All, with two or three exceptions, appeared in fancy dress#! and I append a list of the most notable dresses, while amongst those unnamed there were many very tastefully arrayed, but ' their characters were not sufficiently defined to enable an onlooker to recognise for what) they were intended. Ladies : Mrs. Curtis, female dude ; Mrs. Hamilton, Italian Gipsy ; Mrs. Crow hurst, Dia Vernon ; Mrs. Sinclair, French peasant; Miss Maggie Brown, Night; Miss Malone, Guitana; Miss Stanners, Ophelia; Miss Wylie, comet; Miss Lizzie Robson, Highland lassie Miss Robson, Egraont star; Miss Mary Brown, fairy; Miss MacAulay, snow. Gentlemen : Messrs. Percival, Texan cowboy; H. Penn, clown; C. Curtis, pantaloon ; Cramer, Mephistopheles ; Morton, Circassian youth; Coutts, corsair ; C. Robson, undergraduate; J. cricketer: Veale, footballer; Hamilton, stockman ; Bell, stockman; Vickers, baby; B. Dive, gentleman of the 17th century ; Liardet, Dr. Pangloss. And now for my growl, viz., that the rough h< rseplay indulged in by the comic characters alter supper was decidedly objectionable. —[Own Correspondent.]
