CONTINENTAL SUNDAY OBSERVANCE.
TO THE KDITOR. Sir, —Permit, me bo reply just briefly to your very kind sub-leader of to-day, for ifc seems to me that both of us mean well to the people of our land of adoption, you with notions quite English, and myself with notions imbibed ou the Continent. Therefore, nob wishing to touch upon another subject, namely, the social one, I corao buck to the Sunday observance. And you must admit thab you can only have seen our rustics work their fields on a Sunday in cases of emergency. Such would even be admitted in England, or with us here, for it is not ho much in the towns on the Continent you feel the sacredness of Sabbath; but just leave them on Sunday morning, Mid wander to the villages, where everyone feels with the poeb, " Dies iat der Tag des Hevin " (This is the Day of the Lord) —for everything is quiet and sublime, while a Sabbatical rest seems to be thrown even over Nature itself. Furthermore, I to observe bhat my letter of yesterday has nothing to do with Mr. Upton's discussion, bub is only a reply to your sub-leader of Monday. In mine I intend to champion the working classes, for at home as well a≤ here, wealthy people can afford bo make holidays any day in the week, but working people cannot, and therefore on the Continent the poor have a chance for healthy recreation and amusement from three o'clock p.m. on Sundays.— 1 nni, etc., Hermann Brown.
