THE HIKUTAIA AFFAIR.

[BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN' CORRESPONDENT.] Paeroa, Tuesday. The alleged murder of a native at Hikutaia turns out to be a false report. Constable Mitchell made due enquiry, and found the facts to be as follows :The native in question desiring to drink at a creek in the bush stood his axe up 011 the bank, and leaned down to drink. While drinking the axe fell heavily and struck him on the neck, inflicting a serious wound, lie was afterwards found by the natives, who imagined by appearances that he had been attacked by some person. The wound is reported to be dangerous.
